    • !Joseph Ball, son of William Ball, was born May 24, 1649; died at Epping Forest, Lancaster County, Va., in June, 1711. He Married 1. Elizabeth Romney, daughter of William Romney, of London and 2. Mary Johnson widow of ----- Johnson, of Lancaster County, Va. His second wife Mary Johnson married Richard Hughes after Joseph's death. Wm and Mary Quarterly, Vol XX, 1912, p. 60.

This is used as evidence that Mary's last name was Bennett.

      !12 Feb 1703: Mary Johnson witnessed the deed where Col Joseph Ball gave 190 A to his son-in-law Rawleigh Chinn. Lancaster Co., VA.

      !11 Feb 1707: Joseph Ball's gifts to his children. "To son Joseph Ball, To Hannah Travers, wife of Mr Rawleigh Travers of Stafford Co. To Ann Conway, wife of Mr. Edwin Conway of Lancaster Co. To Easte-Chinn, wife of Mr Rawleigh Chinn aforesaid each daughters of the aforesaid Col. Joseph Ball and to Joseph Carnegie, son of Elizabeth Carnegie late dec'd, which sd Elizabeth, my daughter and wife of Mr John Carnegie, minister in Northumberland Co." and adds this "If I the sd Col. Joseph Ball should decide to marry,"--evidently having the "Widow Johnson" in mind at that time as he reserves certain dower rights in his estate. Lancaster Co., VA, Deed Book 9:246-249.

      !12 Aug 1712: Richard Hewes made a will. He provided for the Johnson children of his wife Mary. Her daughter Elizabeth was to receive his home estate of 160 acres on Cherry Point after her mother's death. The son, John Johnson, was to receive 600 acres in Stafford County near Accokeek Creek.       !19 Jul 1721: Will of Mary Hewes dated 17 Dec 1720 and probated 19 Jul 1721: In the name of God Amen, the seventeenth Day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twenty, I, Mary Hewes of St. Stephens's Parish Northumberland County, widow, being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory, thanks be to Almighty God for the same, and calling to mind the uncertain state of this transitory life and that the flesh must yield to Death, when it shall please God to call, Do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. First, I give and bequeath my soul (to God) that give it to me, and my body to the Earth to be buried in Decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors in these presents nominated, and as touching such worldly estate which has pleased God to bestow upon me, I give, devise and dispsose of in the following manner and forms. Imprimis. I give and devise unto my daughter Mary Ball one young likely negroe woman to be purchased for her out of my estate by my executors and to be delivered unto the said Mary Ball att the age of Eighteen years, but my will is that if the said Mary Ball should dye without Issue lawfully begotten of her body that the said negroe woman with her increase shall return to my loving son John Johnson, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. Item. I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Mary Ball two gold rings the one being a large hoop and the other being a stoned ring. Item. I give unto my said Daughter Mary Ball one young mare and her Increase which mare I formerly gave her by word of mouth. Item. I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Mary Ball sufficient furniture for the bed of her father Joseph Ball left her, Vizt: One good suit of curtains and fallons, one Rugg, one quilt, one pair of Blankets. Item: I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Mary Ball two Diaper Table cloths, marked M.B. with inck, and one dozen of Diaper napkins, two towels, six plates, two pewter dishes, two basons, one large Iron Pott, one Frying pann, one old trunk. Item. I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Mary Ball, one good young paceing horse together with a good sislisk plush side saddle to be purchased by my Executors out of my estate. Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Bonum one suit of white and black calaico, being part of my own wearing apparel. Item. All the rest of my wearing apparel I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Mary Ball, and I do appoint her (to) be under the Tutiledge and government of Capt. George Eskridge during her minority. Item. My will 1s, and I do hereby oblige my Executors to pay to the proprietor or his agent for the securing of my said Daughter her land Twelve pounds if so msuch (be) due. Item. All the rest of my Estate real and personal whatsoever and wheresoever I give and devise unto my son John Johnson, and to his heirs lawfully begotten by his body, and for default of such Issue I devise the saem unto Mary Ball and her heirs lawfully to be begotten of her body, and for default of such Issue I give and devise the said Estate unto my Daughter Elizabeth Bonum, her heirs and assigns forever. Item, I do hereby appoint my said son John Johnson and my trusty and well beloved friend Geor. Eskridge Executor of this my last will and Testament and also revoke and disannul all other former wills or Testaments by me heretofore made or caused to be made either by word or wlriting, ratyfying and confirming this to be my last will and Testament and no other.       Daughter Mary Ball-one negro woman to be purchased for her out of my estate by my executors, and to be delivered to her at the age of eighteen years. If the said Mary Ball should die with-out lawfull issue, the said negro to return to my son John Johnson. Daughter Mary Ball-two gold rings, one being a large hoop and the other a stone ring, and one young mare(' formerly gave her the said mare by word of mouth). I also give her sufficient furniture for the bed her father Joseph Ball left her vizt: one suit of good curtains and vallens, one rugg, one quilt, one pair blankets, also two Diaper table cloths marked M.B.,one dozen of Diaper napkins, two towells, six plates, two pewter dishes, two basons, one large iron pott, one frying pan, one old trunk, one young Paceing horse, and a good silk plush side saddle to be purchased by my executors. Daughter Elizabeth Bonam-one suit of white and black callicoe, being part of my own wearing apparrel. Rest of my wearing apparrel to my daughter Mary Ball, and she to be under the tutlidge of Capt.       !19 JUL 1721: Johnson, John of St. Stephen's Parish. W.W. 1 October 1720---W.P. 19 July 1721. Sister Mary Ball-all my land in Stafford County which my father in law Richard Hewes gave me, to her and the lawfully begott heirs of her body, and for want of such issue to my mother Mary Hewes and her her and assigns. Mother Mary Hewes-the rest of my estate, and she to be my sole executrix, Witness: Benjamin Bussel, Margaret Mattocks, and David Straughan.       !1721: After Mary Ball died Raleigh Chinn was the caretaker of Epping Forest. The property passed to Joseph Ball, Jr.
